1. What is a Life Group?
A life group is a gathering of people who want to connect with one another to study God’s word, pray together, serve together and in general do life together. Typically they are made up of 8-12 people and are fun and interactive environments where you will experience accountability, belonging, and care.
2. Why should I join a Life Group?
Hillcrest is a big church and life groups provide a smaller environment to grow spiritually and they are a great place to make new friends and be part of a community (where you will be missed if you don’t show up). They offer an opportunity to care for each other and serve one another and others in your community.
3. How do I get into a group?
It’s easy to join a life group. You can fill out a connection card and put it in the offering or drop it off at the information desk or you can call the church office at 403-526-4010 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. You will have a chance to discuss the type of group you are looking for so you can get plugged in.
4. How often does a Life Group meet?
It varies from group to group but usually they meet from 2 to four times a month and have a regular day and time (for example Tuesday nights from 7:00-9:00 p.m.)
5. What happens at a Life Group meeting?
While each group is a little different there are some common threads. Most have a time for just hanging out and talking about the previous week and what’s been going on in each other’s daily lives. The central component is a study of something relevant to the members of the group. It may be the sermon based study called Digging Deeper, a study of one of the books of the Bible or a topical study on a topic like marriage or parenting. Life Groups are designed to facilitate friendship, encourage discussion, and help us pray and care for one another and serve in community by engaging each person in the process.
6. How long does a typical Life Group stay together?
This varies from group to group depending on the study or the group dynamics. Some groups agree to go year around while others stick to a yearly rhythm such as fall, winter, and spring but take the summer off with a few social get-togethers to stay connected. Each group decides this amongst themselves usually at the beginning of the ministry year in September. Sometimes there are specific groups that run for a predetermined time based on the curriculum. There are lots of options.
7. Where do Life Groups meet?
Most of our life groups meet in homes throughout the City and surrounding area. A few meet in local restaurants, office buildings, or in the church.
8. What if I don’t like the Life Group I’m in?
We would encourage you to give the group you try a couple visits. Anytime you’re trying something new it may need to grow on you and take a few times to feel like you’re in the right place. However, we want you to find a group that fits you so don’t be afraid to leave the group and try another.
9. Is there childcare available?
Each group deals with childcare on their own. Some are child friendly and include them or find creative ways to provide childcare and others ask that you make child-care arrangements.
10. Can I start my own group?
Yes! If you are a committed follower of Jesus and attend Hillcrest Church we would love to talk with you about facilitating or hosting a group of your own and we are always in need of new groups. There is orientation and training available for new facilitators as well as ongoing support and resources.
